SUMMARY:Mawsons in Summer
DESCRIPTION:Two visits to the garden at Mawsons by kind permission of the owner\, Brian Smith\, who will lead the walks\, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. \nMawsons was once part of the grounds of the Grey Walls estate (now Ridgeway Park) near Jenny Brown’s Point\, Silverdale\, believed to be designed by the renowned landscape architect\, Thomas Mawson\, some time in the 1920s\, for the Sharp family.  The formal gardens that once graced the slopes around the original house nearly one hundred years ago fell into neglect over much of the late twentieth century and then were very nearly lost forever when the estate was divided up for sale and redevelopment a number of years ago. \nFortunately\, local expert on Thomas Mawson\, Brian Smith\, was able to acquire the Summer House and garden and\, together with a small but enthusiastic group of volunteers\, has been patiently and laboriously working to reveal and restore many of its former wonders. \nThis walk offers an opportunity to visit the garden in its glorious summer finery. \n The walk will explore the history\, style and flora of one of the former grand gardens of Silverdale designed by Thomas Mawson. We will look at the Mawson design features\, pond\, the new pergola and areas being restored from the undergrowth\, as well as enjoying the summer flowers. \nThere will be two walks round the gardens\, the first at 10am\, the second at 1pm. Each will last about 2 hours. Walking is mostly on level terrain\, although with some steps as well as sloping and uneven ground. \nAt the request of the owner\, dogs are not permitted on this walk. \nBOOKING ESSENTIAL: Please book through the appropriate Eventbrite listing 10:00 start or 13:00 start.

SUMMARY:Photo Events 2024/5 (Call for Participants)
DESCRIPTION:We are planning two photographic events: \nFirstly\, in June 2025 we intend to mount a major photographic exhibition of images from around the National Landscape\, show-casing our natural beauties\, whether those be bugs\, beasties\, birds\, plant life\, landscapes\, seascapes or skyscapes (or some combination of all of the above!) as part of the Silverdale and Arnside Art and Craft Trail. For this event we’re ruling nothing out\, as long as your photo features some aspect of the National Landscape area. \nBefore then\, though\, we are also planning our calendar for 2025. This will be on the general theme of Plants & Animals in the National Landscape; for this\, we are looking for a total of 13 images\, capable of being printed in A4 landscape format. Images which aren’t selected for the calendar may still be featured on our website\, or to adorn the cover of Keer to Kent. Photographs for the exhibition must be submitted before 30th April 2025: images to be considered for the calendar by 31st August 2024. We are exploring options for prizes for photos for the main exhibition event: photographers whose images are selected for the 2025 calendar will be supplied with a free copy of the calendar. \nTo enter\, please use our online submission form. \n\nCover image: Dallam Bridge by Adrian Almond (winning entry of our 2016 photo competition)

SUMMARY:Spring Lecture: Lee Schofield "Wild Fell: Fighting for Nature on a Lake District Hill Farm"
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to be able to announce the return of our annual Spring Lecture! This year\, our guest speaker will be Lee Schofield\, site manager of RSPB Haweswater\, who will be talking about the landscape restoration efforts described in his book\, Wild Fell: Fighting for Nature on a Lake District Hill Farm\, which was awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in the Conservation category of the James Cropper Wainwright Prize 2022. \nIn 2015\, England’s last and loneliest golden eagle died in an unmarked spot among the remote eastern fells of the Lake District. It was a tragic day for the nation’s wildlife\, but the fight for nature recovery had already begun. Wild Fell by Lee Schofield is the story of a landmark RSPB project to restore over 3\,000 hectares of the Lake District landscape.  In the contested landscape of the National Park\, change is not always welcomed; success relies on finding a balance between rewilding and respecting cherished farming traditions. Wild Fell is a call to recognise that the solutions for a richer world lie at our feet; by focusing on flowers\, we can rebuild landscapes fit to welcome the majestic golden eagle once again. \nThere will be an opportunity to purchase copies of Lee’s book after the talk. \nBooking is not necessary for this event. There will be a small admission fee of £1 per person on the door.

SUMMARY:Brown Hair-streaks at Coldwell - Winter Survey 2022/3
DESCRIPTION:With Lynne Farrell. \nCome and join the hunt for Brown Hair-streak eggs! \nOur reserve at Coldwell Parrock has the honour of being the site of the first recorded sighting of Brown Hair-streak butterflies in the recent era. Since that first record in 2011\, the butterfly has been spotted at various locations in Gait Barrows and is known to be spreading onto other parts of our Coldwell reserves. \nVolunteers are invited to help with a detailed search of the blackthorn bushes of the Coldwell Horseshoe for the eggs of this rare butterfly\, in an attempt to find out how well established our local population has become and how far it is spreading.  Winter is an ideal time to conduct this survey\, as the eggs are more easily spotted whilst the blackthorn is bare of foliage\, so do come along and help us to hunt! \n \nNUMBERS ARE LIMITED at this event. To register an interest\, please contact the organiser\, Lynne Farrell by email. \nParticipants should bring hand-lens\, notebook\, drink (preferable a warm one!) and light refreshments. Please also wear suitable warm\nclothing as we don’t move very quickly whilst searching for eggs!

SUMMARY:21-09 Autumn Colours at Mawsons
DESCRIPTION:A visit to the garden at Mawsons by kind permission of the owner\, Brian Smith\, who will lead the walk. \nThis walk offers an opportunity to visit the garden when (hopefully) it will be at the height of its autumn colours\, especially the Cercidiphyllum japonicum\, Katsura tree (Burnt Sugar\, China 1881. RHS award 1993).  We will look at the Cercidiphyllum and other Autumn colours as well as at the Mawson design features\, and areas being restored from the undergrowth \n The walk will explore the history\, style and flora of one of the former grand gardens of Silverdale designed by Thomas Mawson. We will look at the Mawson design features\, pond\, the new pergola and areas being restored from the undergrowth\, as well as enjoying the summer flowers. \nThe walk round the gardens will start at 2pm and last about 2 hours. Walking is mostly on level terrain\, although with some steps as well as sloping and uneven ground. \nAt the request of the owner\, dogs are not permitted on this walk. \nBOOKING ESSENTIAL This walk is now FULL.  To request places on the waiting list\, please submit a Waiting List Application. \n

SUMMARY:21-03 Geology and Fossils of Far Arnside
DESCRIPTION:A walk along the coast at Far Arnside\, led by geologist\, Tim Tranter. After graduation Tim Tranter started his career with the British Antarctic Survey\, earning a PhD based on fieldwork conducted in Antarctica.  He subsequently worked for Shell and Maersk Oil in various overseas locations for 24 years. He now works from home in Arnside. \nThis trip will be more of an observational ramble than a walk\, as such\, along the beach and foreshore at Far Arnside\, with frequent stops at points of interest and plenty of opportunity to look in detail at the fascinating features of this area. The walk offers the chance to see all three limestone formations of the AONB in one location and to study the details of a fault zone as well as look at well-preserved coral fossils (depending on beach conditions). \nThe walk will commence at 2pm and will last about two and a half hours. \nUnsuitable for dogs. \nBOOKING ESSENTIAL. This walk is now FULL.  To request places on the waiting list\, please submit a Waiting List Application.

SUMMARY:21-01 Swifts in Arnside
DESCRIPTION:A walk by Peter Moreton of Swifts in the Community. \nSummer would not be summer without the scream of swifts echoing through our streets. But this iconic sound of summer may soon be gone forever – swift populations are currently plummeting as modern building practices increasingly deprive the birds of their traditional\, long-standing nesting sites. \nThis walk\, led by Peter Moreton\, will be around Arnside showing participants where swifts can be seen to best advantage in the brief summer period when they are around and we hope to see swifts entering their nests.  Participants will also be given guidance on how to provide for these wonderful birds. \nThe walk will commence at 8pm and will last approximately two and a half hours. \nNot suitable for dogs. \nBooking essential.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL EVENT: Nature on my doorstep — every day throughout June
DESCRIPTION:With our main events all suspended until after the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted\, we are replacing our normal programme with a daily Virtual Event running on our Facebook social media channels. \nThis new virtual event is an extension to our “News and Views of the AONB” social media event\, aimed at those people who remain unable or unwilling to take advantage of any relaxation of the COVID-19 restrictions.  The event is intended to provide an opportunity for participants to share whatever marvels (or horrors\, even) of nature they may encounter in the close environs of their homes\, allowing everyone to participate fully and also continue to SAFE HOME; STAY SAFE for as long as they feel this is necessary. \nYou can participate in the event on our Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/ASLandscapeTrust/) or follow and contribute to the event yourself on our Facebook Group (Arnside & Silverdale AONB Landscape Trust (Official)).  The latter is a closed group so you are not already a member of that group on Facebook you will need to submit a join request and wait for this to be approved before you will be able to see or contribute content. We will process all such requests as quickly as we can — usually within an hour or so\, often less. \nWe hope you will join us in this daily event and share your discoveries of Nature on your doorstep\, be they wonderful\, puzzling\, spectacular or simply every-day.  Whatever you’re encountering\, we’d love to hear about it. \nThis event is free and open to all.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL EVENT: Daily News and Views from the AONB during COVID-19 — EXTENDED
DESCRIPTION:Owing to the popularity of this event\, it has now been extended for a further fortnight. \nWith our main events all suspended until after the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted\, we are replacing our normal programme with a daily Virtual Event running on our Facebook social media channels.  Each day (or as often as we are able to) members of the Trust will provide short summary of news and photos from our daily permitted exercise activity in or around the AONB\, for the benefit of those unable to visit the area at the moment.  We also welcome contributions to this event from anyone able to be out and about\, or merely with views or reminiscences of the area to share with others.  We recognise that this is a poor substitute for actually being in the Arnside and Silverdale AONB in the beautiful spring weather\, but we hope that it will help tide everyone over until these darks times are over and we can all get out and about again. \nYou can follow the event on our Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/ASLandscapeTrust/) or follow and contribute to the event yourself on our Facebook Group (Arnside & Silverdale AONB Landscape Trust (Official)).  The latter is a closed group so you are not already a member of that group on Facebook you will need to submit a join request and wait for this to be approved before you will be able to see or contribute content.
