SUMMARY:Mawsons in Summer
DESCRIPTION:A visit to the garden at Mawsons by kind permission of the owner\, Brian Smith\, who will lead the walk. \nMawsons was once part of the grounds of the Grey Walls estate (now Ridgeway Park) near Jenny Brown’s Point\, Silverdale\, believed to be designed by the renowned landscape architect\, Thomas Mawson\, some time in the 1920s\, for the Sharp family.  The formal gardens that once graced the slopes around the original house nearly one hundred years ago fell into neglect over much of the late twentieth century and then were very nearly lost forever when the estate was divided up for sale and redevelopment a number of years ago. \nFortunately\, local expert on Thomas Mawson\, Brian Smith\, was able to acquire the Summer House and garden and\, together with a small but enthusiastic group of volunteers\, has been patiently and laboriously working to reveal and restore many of its former wonders. \nThis walk offers an opportunity to visit the garden in its glorious summer finery. \n The walk will explore the history\, style and flora of one of the former grand gardens of Silverdale designed by Thomas Mawson. We will look at the Mawson design features\, pond\, the new pergola and areas being restored from the undergrowth\, as well as enjoying the summer flowers. \nThere will be two walks round the gardens\, the first at 10am\, the second at 1pm. Each will last about 2 hours. Walking is mostly on level terrain\, although with some steps as well as sloping and uneven ground. \nAt the request of the owner\, dogs are not permitted on this walk. \nBOOKING ESSENTIAL. Bookings can be made via the event listing on the AONB Partnership website or by emailing bookings@landscapetrust.org.uk. \nThere will be another opportunity to visit the garden in October. \n

SUMMARY:Photo Events 2024/5 (Call for Participants)
DESCRIPTION:We are planning two photographic events: \nFirstly\, in June 2025 we intend to mount a major photographic exhibition of images from around the National Landscape\, show-casing our natural beauties\, whether those be bugs\, beasties\, birds\, plant life\, landscapes\, seascapes or skyscapes (or some combination of all of the above!) as part of the Silverdale and Arnside Art and Craft Trail. For this event we’re ruling nothing out\, as long as your photo features some aspect of the National Landscape area. \nBefore then\, though\, we are also planning our calendar for 2025. This will be on the general theme of Plants & Animals in the National Landscape; for this\, we are looking for a total of 13 images\, capable of being printed in A4 landscape format. Images which aren’t selected for the calendar may still be featured on our website\, or to adorn the cover of Keer to Kent. Photographs for the exhibition must be submitted before 30th April 2025: images to be considered for the calendar by 31st August 2024. We are exploring options for prizes for photos for the main exhibition event: photographers whose images are selected for the 2025 calendar will be supplied with a free copy of the calendar. \nTo enter\, please use our online submission form. \n\nCover image: Dallam Bridge by Adrian Almond (winning entry of our 2016 photo competition)
