SUMMARY:21-06 The Maritime History of Arnside
DESCRIPTION:This walk will be lead by Alasdair Simpson and Mary Hamilton. \nAlasdair is a member of Arnside Sailing Club and the Arnside Archive Group. Mary is a member of the Arnside Archive Group. Both were involved with obtaining lottery funding to bring the Crossfield-built yacht Severn back to Arnside in 2018. \nThe main theme of this circular walk through Arnside will be the maritime heritage of the village and how this has shaped its development\, especially since the mid 19th century. During the walk we will point out some of the historical landmarks telling the story of this past. We will touch on the construction of the railway viaduct\, the pier\, the Albion pub and the role of the Crossfield family and their boat-building business. \nParts of this walk will be featured this Autumn in a BBC Villages by the Sea programme about Arnside. \nThis walk is suitable for dogs on leads. \nThis walks starts at 2pm and will take approximately two hours. \nBOOKING ESSENTIAL This walk is now FULL.  To request places on the waiting list\, please submit a Waiting List Application.

DESCRIPTION:An introduction to the tidal forces of the Kent Estuary\, Mike Warren. \nThis event will feature a talk about tides in general and an exploration of some of the tidal features of the Kent Estuary\, including the incoming tidal bore. \nAs we will be walking along the shore around a high tide\, it may be muddy and slippery.  Participants are advised to wear walking boots\, as well as other suitable outdoor clothing\, as some of the walking will be over rocks and over other possibly slippery surfaces. \nThis walk is not suitable for dogs. \nThis walks starts at 10:30am and will take approximately two hours. DESCRIPTION:Annual General Meeting of the Landscape Trust.\nAll members are invited to apply for tickets to attend the 2021 AGM. SUMMARY:21-03 Geology and Fossils of Far Arnside
DESCRIPTION:A walk along the coast at Far Arnside\, led by geologist\, Tim Tranter. After graduation Tim Tranter started his career with the British Antarctic Survey\, earning a PhD based on fieldwork conducted in Antarctica.  He subsequently worked for Shell and Maersk Oil in various overseas locations for 24 years. He now works from home in Arnside. \nThis trip will be more of an observational ramble than a walk\, as such\, along the beach and foreshore at Far Arnside\, with frequent stops at points of interest and plenty of opportunity to look in detail at the fascinating features of this area. The walk offers the chance to see all three limestone formations of the AONB in one location and to study the details of a fault zone as well as look at well-preserved coral fossils (depending on beach conditions). \nThe walk will commence at 2pm and will last about two and a half hours. \nUnsuitable for dogs. \nBOOKING ESSENTIAL. DESCRIPTION:A day of walks with Bob Pickup\, reserves manager for the Landscape Trust. \nCelebrate National Meadow Day in a recovering meadow\, which also has limestone features and some fine trees.  \nThis event will be feature two walks during the day. The first will commence at 10.00am\, the second at 1.30pm. DESCRIPTION:A walk by Peter Moreton of Swifts in the Community. \nSummer would not be summer without the scream of swifts echoing through our streets. But this iconic sound of summer may soon be gone forever – swift populations are currently plummeting as modern building practices increasingly deprive the birds of their traditional\, long-standing nesting sites. \nThis walk\, led by Peter Moreton\, will be around Arnside showing participants where swifts can be seen to best advantage in the brief summer period when they are around and we hope to see swifts entering their nests.  Participants will also be given guidance on how to provide for these wonderful birds. \nThe walk will commence at 8pm and will last approximately two and a half hours. \nNot suitable for dogs. \nBooking essential.

DESCRIPTION:With guest speaker\, Chris Winnick\, Chair of Butterfly Conservation Cumbria as well as Branch Organiser for both BC Cumbria and BC Lancashire. \nPLEASE NOTE:  Owing to concerns regarding the health risks of public gatherings during the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak this event has been postponed to a future date.  We apologise for any disappointment or inconvenience caused. 15 March 2020 \n  \nWe are fortunate within the Arnside and Silverdale AONB to be able to see over 40 of Britain’s 50 or so species of butterfly either within the AONB itself or only a short distance away in the southern Lake District. The local area is home to some of the UK rarest species. In this extended evening event\, Chris Winnick will provide a detailed look at most of Cumbria’s butterfly species\, concentrating in particular on special projects being undertaken by Butterfly Conservation\, targeted at helping conserve and protect future populations of our rarest ones. \nThe evening will run from 7.30pm – 9.30pm\, including a short break for refreshments. \nNo booking is required for this event\, which is free and open to all.

DESCRIPTION:With guest speaker\, Steven Rutherford FBNA. \nJoin us in Yealand Village Hall for our annual Jacob’s Join social event\, when our guest speaker will be travelling all the way from South Yorkshire to tell us about “Phenology\, Biodiversity and the Change in Climate”. \nSteven Rutherford is Honorary Chair of the British Naturalists’ Association and we are delighted that he has agreed to give this evening’s talk.  Steven will be talking about how the intricate links in the timings of events in the natural world are sensitive to even the small shifts in climatic conditions\, resulting in the accelerating changes to the climate having catastrophic consequences for the breeding success of some of our native species and for biodiversity generally. \nPlease do join us for what promises to be a truly fascinating and thought-provoking evening. \nParticipants are asked to bring along a savoury or sweet dish by way of contribution to the shared meal before the talk. \nNo booking is required for this event\, which is free and open to all.

SUMMARY:EP5 – Mawson's Garden
DESCRIPTION:A visit to the garden at Mawson’s by kind permission of the owner\, Brian Smith\, who will lead the walk. \nMawson’s was once part of the grounds of the Grey Walls estate (now Ridgeway Park) near Jenny Brown’s Point\, Silverdale\, believed to be designed by the renowned landscape architect\, Thomas Mawson\, some time in the 1920s\, for the Sharp family.  The formal gardens that once graced the slopes around the original house nearly one hundred years ago fell into neglect over much of the late twentieth century and then were very nearly lost forever when the estate was divided up for sale and redevelopment a number of years ago. \nFortunately\, local expert on Thomas Mawson\, Brian Smith\, was able to acquire the Summer House and garden and\, together with a small but enthusiastic group of volunteers\, has been patiently and laboriously working to reveal and restore many of its former wonders. \nBrian very generously allowed Landscape Trust members to visit the gardens at Mawson’s in June last year. This event will provide a very privileged viewing of the development of a labour of love\, and offers a unique opportunity to glimpse a very special corner of the Extraordinary Place that is our AONB. \nThe walk round the gardens will take about an hour and a half. Walking is mostly on level terrain\, although with some steps and sloping ground. \nAt the request of the owner\, dogs are not permitted on this walk. \nPlease note that there is extremely limited parking available at the venue itself and on nearby roads.  Please let us know when booking if you will require assistance with transport to the event\, or can offer places to others. \nPLEASE NOTE: THIS WALK IS NOW FULLY BOOKED but Brian Smith has very generously agreed to fit in an additional visit on Friday\, 13th September.  Please see walk EP6 for details. DESCRIPTION:A walk by local botanist and natural historian\, Lynne Farrell. \nThis walk will be an exploration of the shoreline and environs of the Kent Estuary between Arnside and New Barns\, looking at the local botany\, geology\, bird-life and other general wildlife of the estuary\, as well as touching upon some aspects of local history. \nThe walk will be of approximately 2 miles\, and is expected to take about 2 hours (or longer\, if people wish to buy refreshments at the Bob-In Café\, at the half-way point).  Participants are advised to wear walking boots\, as well as other suitable outdoor clothing\, as some of the walking will be over rocks and over other possibly slippery surfaces.  There will also be some road walking. \nIf you will be travelling to this event by car and are able to offer a lift to someone without transport\, or alternatively would appreciate a lift to the event\, please let us know when booking. \nPLEASE NOTE: Booking for this event is by email only.

DESCRIPTION:A walk by Glen Swainson of Natural England. \nOne of the major features that makes the Arnside and Silverdale AONB such an Extraordinary Place is the limestone pavement that makes up so much it.  Nowhere is this as spectacularly displayed as at the Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve in the heart of the AONB\, where one of the most important limestone pavement areas in Britain is under the care of Natural England. \nThe manager of the reserve\, Glen Swainson\, will lead this walk around Gait Barrows and the neighbouring Hawes Water\, explaining the reserve’s history\, its special qualities and features\, Natural England’s current policies and plans for the conservation of nationally rare plant and insect species\, as well as showing off some of its hidden corners. \nThe walk will start at 2 pm and last about 2 hours. The walk will include some rough terrain which may well be slippery\, especially if wet. Please ensure that you bring water-proofs and wear stout footwear. \nDogs are not permitted on this walk\, owing to Natural England policy at the reserve. \nThere is only limited parking for this event. DESCRIPTION:A walk by Jamie Normington of Cumbria Wildlife Trust \nHidden corners and little known gems abound within the Arnside and Silverdale AONB\, and help to make it such an Extraordinary Place to live and to visit. \nOne of the area’s most easily overlooked gems is Grubbins Wood Nature Reserve\, a lovely ancient woodland and meadow reserve owned by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust. The reserve is tucked away at the side of the Kent estuary at New Barns Bay\, where it is undoubtedly passed by many every day but probably only ever visited by a few. SUMMARY:EP6 – Mawson's Garden
DESCRIPTION:Owing to overwhelming demand for walk EP5\, Brian Smith has very generously offered to add a further opportunity to visit the garden at Mawson’s on Friday 13th September. \nMawson’s was once part of the grounds of the Grey Walls estate (now Ridgeway Park) near Jenny Brown’s Point\, Silverdale\, believed to be designed by the renowned landscape architect\, Thomas Mawson\, some time in the 1920s\, for the Sharp family.  The formal gardens that once graced the slopes around the original house nearly one hundred years ago fell into neglect over much of the late twentieth century and then were very nearly lost forever when the estate was divided up for sale and redevelopment a number of years ago. \nFortunately\, local expert on Thomas Mawson\, Brian Smith\, was able to acquire the Summer House and garden and\, together with a small but enthusiastic group of volunteers\, has been patiently and laboriously working to reveal and restore many of its former wonders. \nBrian very generously allowed Landscape Trust members to visit the gardens at Mawson’s in June last year. This event will provide a very privileged viewing of the development of a labour of love\, and offers a unique opportunity to glimpse a very special corner of the Extraordinary Place that is our AONB. \nThe walk round the gardens will take about an hour and a half. Walking is mostly on level terrain\, although with some steps and sloping ground. \nAt the request of the owner\, dogs are not permitted on this walk. \nPlease note that there is extremely limited parking available at the venue itself and on nearby roads.  Please let us know when booking if you will require assistance with transport to the event\, or can offer places to others. \nPLEASE NOTE: Booking for this event is by email only. Preferential booking is being offered in the first instance to those people on the waiting list for EP5\, or wishing to transfer from EP5 to this walk.  Please note also that it is not possible to book places for the same participant on both this walk and EP5. \n

SUMMARY:W6 – The Secrets of Silverdale (RESCHEDULED)
DESCRIPTION:This rescheduled walk was originally planned for Saturday 8th June but was postponed owing to bad weather.  The leader\, Ann Turnbull\, has kindly offered to reschedule the event to Sunday 28th July\, starting at 1:30pm and lasting approximately 3 hours. \nLandscape Trust member\, Ann Turnbull\, has lived in Silverdale for 45 years and has lots of local knowledge. \n\n\n\nAnn will lead an amended version of the previous Secrets of Silverdale walk held in 2017\, including a walk across the sands to Gibralter Farm\, hearing history of the seaward part of the village. This will be followed by an exploration of the southern area of Silverdale. \n\n\n\nFeatures on the walk include views over Morecambe Bay\, disappearing salt-marsh\, coastal rocks and fossils\, maritime and village history. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis walk is suitable for well-behaved dogs on leads. \n\n\n\nAs the number of participants is limited to 20\, booking is essential. Preferential booking is being offered to those who signed up for the originally scheduled walk\, so if you had a place on that walk and have not already done so\, please claim your reserved place by Monday 8th July. SUMMARY:W9 - Fell End Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:A walk by Chris Winnick. \nChris will lead a visit to the AONB’s newest reserve\, at Fell End Caravan Park\, looking at the butterflies and other wildlife on the reserve as well as explaining its management. Fell End is a compact but highly diverse reserve\, consisting of a mix of ancient broad-leaf woodland\, limestone pavement and wetlands.  It is managed for wildlife generally\, although with a particular emphasis on providing nest sites for birds such as Lapwing and Curlew\, which are in decline nationally\, largely as a consequence of changes in agricultural practice. \nThe walk will begin at 10:00am and last approximately 2 hours and is suitable for all ages. It will involve easy walking of less than a mile over level ground on rough tracks. You are advised to bring waterproofs and wear stout footwear. \nThe reserve includes two hides overlooking a wetland area\, so you may wish to bring binoculars with you so that you can spend some time bird-watching after the event. \nSorry\, but dogs are not permitted on the reserve.

SUMMARY:W7 – Recording the Visual Landscape (A Personal Sketchbook)
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\nA walk with a difference by Suzanne Swinson. \n\n\n\nThis is a walk with a difference in that participants will each be invited to create a personal sketchbook of the walk\, exploring the area around Far Arnside\, examining and recording geological features and landscapes from modern to medieval. No artistic skills are required! \n\n\n\nIn the distant past Suzanne was a geographer and later went on to take a geology and environmental science degree through the OU. She is interested in how the landscapes of today can tell stories about the past. \n\n\n\nThe walk is 3.5 miles in length\, with some gentle ascents. Some paths are narrow\, uneven and possibly slippery. SUMMARY:W6 – The Secrets of Silverdale
DESCRIPTION:This walk will be led by Landscape Trust member\, Ann Turnbull\, who has lived in Silverdale for 45 years and has a lot of local knowledge. \n\n\n\nAnn will lead an amended version of the previous Secrets of Silverdale walk held in 2017\, including a walk across the sands to Gibralter Farm\, hearing history of the seaward part of the village. This will be followed by an exploration of the southern area of Silverdale\, finishing at The Wolfhouse\, where lunch will be available in the cafe\, if required. \n\n\n\nFeatures on the walk include views over Morecambe Bay\, disappearing salt-marsh\, coastal rocks and fossils\, maritime and village history. \n\n\n\nNumbers will be taken before the start of the walk to reserve tables for lunch at The Wolfhouse Cafe. \n\n\n\nThis walk is suitable for well-behaved dogs on leads. \n\n\n\nAs the number of participants is limited to 20\, booking is essential.

SUMMARY:W5 – Gait Barrows in all its Aspects
DESCRIPTION:A Walk by Mike & Jean Warren. \n\n\n\nPlease note that dogs are not permitted on this walk. \n\n\n\nThis is a general walk enjoying the flora\, fauna and landscape of Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve\, hopefully taking in the Lady’s-slipper orchid and possibly Duke of Burgundy butterfly. It is being led by Mike and Jean Warren who are keen natural historians and have led many walks in the past. The walk is 3.5 to 4 miles in length\, mainly level with some rocky paths\, and will explore various permitted paths within the reserve. The event should finish by 12.30pm. \n\n\n\n\n\nLady’s-slipper Orchid\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the number of participants is limited to 20\, booking is essential

SUMMARY:R2 – Families Day at Coldwell Horseshoe Reserves: Get Close to Nature!
DESCRIPTION:A close look at what’s growing and living on the hay meadows\, limestone grassland and woodland that we are developing at these linked areas.  Featuring flowers\, grasses\, butterflies\, bugs\, beetles and spiders (tiny ones) \nThis is a free event\, suitable for all ages.  There is no need to book\, just turn up and stay as long as you like but wear outdoor clothes and shoes\, as you might want to get your hands (and knees) dirty or even delve into the nettles (not compulsory). \nWater will be available if you bring your own reusable cup or bottle. \nPlease note that this event will be cancelled if it is a wet day\, as this sort of thing is no fun in the rain!

SUMMARY:W4 - Bird Migration and other Natural History in South Silverdale
DESCRIPTION:A Field Trip by Jill and John Webb.\n\n\n\nThe leaders of this walk\, John and Jill Webb\, are active members of Arnside and District Natural History Society. Jill is one of the Society’s Botany Recorders\, with Jack Scout as part of her recording area. John’s primary interest is birds; his local survey work includes recording at Jenny Brown’s Point for the national Wetland Bird Survey. \n\n\n\nThe primary focus of the walk will be migratory birds\, including warblers on the National Trust properties and wetland birds on the estuary. The route passes through some botanically rich areas and it is possible other wildlife will be encountered. A high tide of 9.4 metres is predicted at 11:45. \n\n\n\nThe circular walk is about 2 miles long\, visiting Jack Scout\, Jenny Brown’s Point and Heald Brow. It is mainly easy ground but there is difficult terrain below Brown’s Houses\, and some rocks which can be very slippery when wet. The event will finish at approximately 1:00pm. \n\n\n\nDogs are not permitted on this walk. \n\n\n\nAs the number of participants is limited to 12\, booking is essential.
